A very telling picture. A picture that tells the story of a human tragedy ,the tragedy of the uprooting of the people along with their modest belongings and livestock to a distant place to live in some decrepit refugee shelter.
What I also like about the picture is the kaleidoscopic colours in the picture which seem to contrast so sharply with the grimness of the situation.

A beautiful photo taken in Chandni Chowk ,New Delhi during the 1984 riots. The picture captures sleeping men and their monkey in the Chandni Chowk area of Delhi during the violent riots of 1984 which brought about untold destruction and left permanent scars on the Indian psyche. The all-pervading listlessness and the grotesque vendetta which caused the riots crippled economic activity deeply affecting the lives of people like these who were living on the fringe of the society as beggars,monkey-men, smalltime peddlers etc. The beauty of the photograph is unmistakable .It conveys the hopelessness of the situation so effectively. Two men and their monkey were seen sleeping on the footpath with an amazing indifference to the goings-on in the city. The abandon with which the men are sleeping outside a house which appears to have been bolted from outside conveys so effectively that in the end nothing really mattered ,not even religion, not even hunger or the barest necessities of life, as sleep takes over the lives of men and their monkeys.
The photograph is by Prashant Panjiar. (Taken from Outlook India)

I like the way the children stand there in their uniforms entirely absorbed in their own world, their body postures reflecting a total unconcern for the world :

The amazing colour of the wall ,the winding stair-case and the the bullet-holes together make a telling story. The colour adds a touch of irony to the situation ,suggesting everything was wonderful before, the joy and splendor of living, the young and the old celebrated life and its many-hued splendor and then one day it all happened. The aggressor with his arrogant fire power blasted several holes in the yellow wall ,in the door to domestic bliss and comfort and in the hearts of the people. The wall with the holes is a mute testimony to the brutality of the war in Bosnia and to the large scale destruction of innocent civilians who lived in such houses and carried on their daily lives reaching the comfort of their houses by winding iron stair cases. There is still a touch of green at the bottom of the stair case and the stair case stands silently and the wall refuses to crumble despite so many attempts to destroy it.
YNNOD(Stumbleupon) has made an insightful observation which accentuates the irony in the picture. It is a pity I missed it .The staircase has only one railing !As you reach the top you can neither go up nor down. The hopelessness of the situation is stark. Thanks ,YNNOD, for this very incisive observation.

Magical ! Check out the entire portfolio of Ramaiah Gidda .The grainy photographs ,in black and white, are sheer poetry ! The wistfulness seen in most of the photos does not appear to be merely a product of technical manipulation but a candid shot with a realism close to my own experiences of the rural living. Much of the poetry of the photos stems from the exoticism of such themes to a Western reader not familiar with the Indian milieu but to us who are brought upon such experiences the poetry still exists in the form of a nostalgic return to our childhood in rural India , more particularly in the villages of Andhra pradesh which form the backdrop of these pictures.

Catching the leaping man in the air is as though he is made to freeze in time. The shadow ,also frozen, sheds its unreality.

Solitude

The starkness of the frozen landscape is beautifully accentuated by the fence. The tree,in solitude,is trying to reach out to the sky in an intensely concentrated effort .

The most amusing thing about this picture is the dog’s expression when he sees the lovers kissing. He is probably seeing it as an act of aggression or a threat.
